Italy - book report
... we started the morning with jumping over board, swimming a few circles around the boat, then coffee, teeth brushing and off the anchor. sailing itself is aparently a very elaborate art of being one with the water, the wind and your boat and constantly making complicated calculations of the sailing course. i tried a bit - learned some knots, steered some wheel and pulled some ropes, but always rather layed on the deck with my book, or, again, took a nap. cooking was also fun. and as romantic as sailing was, i was always waiting to get on land. in conclusion, unless u're taking a very active part and u understand how everything works and try to operate the boat yourself... u will soon get bored. or maybe i was just too lazy.
the land is another story.
every night we anchored by some coastline fishing village. some consisted only of hotels and restaurants, others... of less hotels and restaurant. this way or another they always offered excellent icecream coffe and pizza. we drank coffee by the litres, partialy because it just was cheeper than in germany. we ate icecream and pizza as if it was our last day on land before we disappear into the see. it was our last day on land only until tomorrow, of course. i also bought about a kg of fruits and berries every day, because i thought that eating cherries makes the village even more exotic.
most of the villages had only a few streets but those were real postcard ones (or photos ;)
the feeling i've got from beeing on the water is of this huge water plane with nothing on it, except for some other boats. no cities, no forests, no animals. just space and the horizon. a minimalistic environment.
and then when u come to a port and u know that the whole village just flushes its sewage into the see, and all the huge boats leave so much crap behind them, including gas. when in the open see with no one in sight u see plastic bags floating around u. when u know all this u become very sad. but i guess not much more than otherwise, when u r on land.
we also spend an afternoon in Naples and about a day and two halves in Rome.
Naples was absolutely astonishing. there's nothing to say about it - it's neither beautiful, nor ugly; neither friendly nor alien. just crazy! dirty, stinky, and crazy. sometimes like south TA. motorbikes everywhere with whole families riding on them. the drivers are sometimes maybe 14 years old. no helmets, nothing. some streets dont have the separation between pavement and the road, they're too narrow for the both anyway. only the motorbikes pass by u as u're trying to be a wallflower. other streets are so wide and so wild that after u crossed them u have to relax and drink a cup of coffee. no tourists, only the locals can survive this madness. after the few hours we spent there i was so exhausted that i was happy we didnt get to stay there any longer.
Rome had a different face, and a different pace. mostly hot, humid and crowded. in the St. Peters there were so many tourists that i almost puked. i guess the best part was the breakfast at some gorgeous cafe we found by chance with some proper coffee and croissant, for as cheep as 1.30 EUR (in konstanz for this money u wouldnt buy neither the coffee nor the croissant alone, which refined their taste even more). we went there 2 days in a row and sat there for hours enjoying the little pleasures of life and making plans about saving the trees and the whales. oh, the whales, they go so good with coffee!
the only thing i will probably remember from rome is the sketchy hostel where everyone was american and where they sold us a night on the roof because they were overbooked. since we had such a great time in the fresh air, with the stars, and some couple fucking in the corner, we decided to stay there the second night as well. since the couple wasnt there anymore, and since we figured that the only thing there was to pay for on that roof was the live porn anyway, we just checked out the next morning - they forgot to ask and we forgot to pay. so that's the story how i spent two nights in rome for 7.50 EUR. the sex was really bad, of u're asking.
